Carib Territory and Emerald Pool. Dominica is the island in the Caribbean with the largest population of Carib Indians; approximately 3000 descendants of the "Kalinagos" as they call themselves. They live on the east coast of the island, in the Carib Territory, 60 minutes from the city of Roseau. We will visit the village Barana Aute, where we will learn about and appreciate many aspects of their history and culture, including their dances, songs, language and beautiful and unique crafts. Stop to admire and to discover how they built their dwellings, their canoes - so important for their migrations and fishing, and their elaborate hand-woven baskets, crafted using local materials. After this marvelous experience, we will travel 30 minutes by bus through the rain forest of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, to the entrance of the Emerald Pool. After a 10 minute walk we will arrive at an exotic place in the heart of the forest where a waterfall cascades into an emerald colored pool. For this interesting and diverse excursion, we will go by bus to the outskirts of the village of Soufriere (Translated to English "Sulfur") in the extreme south of Dominica, about 20 minutes from Roseau. We will travel through diverse and picturesque villages, along the western coast, among them Loubiere and Pointe Mitchel. Once we arrive to the entrance of this unequalled tourist site, Soufriere Sulphur Spring, let the path to adventure lead your footsteps for 20 minutes in a small walk along the youngest volcano in Dominica "The Soufriere Volcano". The two epochs identified in the deposits of this volcano suggest that its greatest activity occurred about 10 000 to 12 000 years ago. Watch and admire the sulfurous gas leaks from the belly of the earth and feel the heat emanating from the ground beneath your feet which in turn elevates the temperature of the water that runs in small springs, located in the area. Returning from this fantastic walk we’ll visit Scotts Head, only 10 minutes driving distance. A marvelous place for divers and snorkelers and also to enjoy the cool trade winds. There you can literally walk in between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The English named the area Scotts Head, after their hero Captain Scott, when they captured the island from the French in 1761. It is located at an altitude of 2500 feet above sea level in The Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Patrimony. To begin this unforgettable adventure, we will take a bus from the city of Roseau, heading in the direction of the interior of the island, more specifically, the village of Laudat, a mere 20 minutes from the city. The only way to arrive at this impressive and high lake is by walking. The trail begins in the village of Laudat and extends approximately 7 miles. It is advisable to wear appropriate footwear and light, comfortable clothing. It is common to encounter light showers during the course of this scenic walk. It takes approximately 3 hours from the point of disembarkation from the bus to the arrival at the lake. During the journey you will travel through and discover unforgettable places such as Titou Gorge (a cave which houses a hidden waterfall), the Breakfast River, and Morne Nichols, a 3000 foot high mountain; the highest point of the journey from which you can have a panoramic view of the Valley of Desolation where vapors emanate and the high temperatures boil the water that rests on the surface of the land through numerous vents or holes. The Middleham Falls is located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. We depart from the city, Roseau by bus, and drive for approximately 25 minutes, through the Roseau valley. A one hour hike through the National Park will take you to this magnificent sight. While walking, it is common to see many species of birds that live and breed in this park. Should you not see many of these birds, be assured that you will most certainly hear their calls. Try to identify the call of the Mountain whistle, the Red-necked or Jaco/Jacquot parrot (Amazona arausiaca) and the blue-headed Hummingbird. The lush rain forest is alive with different shades of green and brown, and offers you the opportunity to witness the impressive height of some trees, for instance the Gommier, Mang Blanc, Karapit and many others. Also the beautiful and colorful Balizier and orchids flowers decorate the forest floor and the trunks of the trees. Our climb begins at about 1600ft, ascends to the ridge at 2,200ft and then descends to the falls themselves.
